An informal name for the historic residential streets surrounding downtown, where older homes and traditional streetscapes meet selective infill.
Old City is a locally used umbrella term for historic residential streets around Guelph's downtown core. It is useful as a real-estate and lifestyle description, but it is not a single precisely bounded municipal neighbourhood. Depending on the speaker, it may include parts of the streets west and south of downtown and overlap with Exhibition Park, Downtown, Old University or other central districts.
The common thread is an older urban form: traditional street grids, sidewalks, mature lots and housing built across many periods of Guelph's growth. British place names such as Dublin, Glasgow, Oxford and Yorkshire reinforce the historic identity of the area.
Approximate location
Old City generally refers to the residential ring immediately surrounding downtown, particularly the streets west and southwest of the commercial core. Because it is an informal label, a property should also be described by its specific street and nearby recognized neighbourhood.
Housing and streetscape
The area includes stone and brick houses, Victorian and Edwardian homes, cottages, duplexes, small apartment buildings and newer infill. Some streets are highly consistent in age and scale; others mix historic houses with contemporary additions or multi-residential buildings.
Parks, trails and landmarks
Residents are close to downtown public spaces, the Speed River, Royal City Park, the Downtown Trail and smaller central parks. The Farmers' Market, library services, cultural venues and the commercial core are also nearby, depending on the exact pocket.

The traditional grid supports multiple routes into downtown. Gordon, Edinburgh, Wellington, Waterloo, Paisley and Norfolk are major connectors. Walkability varies by exact location, topography and the destination being considered.
