A mature central neighbourhood between downtown and the University of Guelph, with established homes, tree-lined streets and river access.
Old University occupies the central residential area between downtown and the University of Guelph. Its location creates a close relationship with the Speed River, Royal City Park, the university campus and Cutten Fields. The neighbourhood contains some of Guelph's most recognizable older residential streets, but its housing is more varied than the phrase "old homes" suggests.
Large historic properties, modest detached houses, mid-century homes, small apartment buildings and later infill all contribute to the area. The neighbourhood is also part of Guelph's broader town-and-gown landscape, so activity levels and property use can differ depending on proximity to campus and major routes.
Approximate location
The Old University Neighbourhood Residents' Association identifies the neighbourhood as bounded by the Speed and Eramosa rivers to the north, the University of Guelph and Cutten Fields to the east, College Avenue West to the south and the Hanlon Expressway to the west.
Housing and streetscape
Housing ranges from stone and brick character homes to smaller detached houses, bungalows, duplexes and low-rise multi-residential buildings. Some properties have been carefully preserved; others have been extensively updated or converted. Street width, topography, lot size and proximity to campus influence the feel of each pocket.
Parks, trails and landmarks
Royal City Park and the Speed River trail system form the northern edge of the area. The neighbourhood is also close to the university grounds, the Arboretum, Cutten Fields and several small local parks. River and trail access is one of its strongest geographic features.
Access and everyday amenities
Gordon Street and Edinburgh Road connect the neighbourhood north-south, while College Avenue provides an east-west route. Downtown and the university are both close, and many streets have direct walking or cycling access to the river corridor.
